Andy & Carol Patton AUGUST 2007
“You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord Is near.” James 5:8
As some of you may have seen or read, there was a large earthquake in Peru. Although it did not affect the jungle region of Peru, the earthquake still affected us. During our first term of service in Peru, we actually visited the city of Ica and the surrounding area on two different occasions.
The pastor of the FiIadeIfia church in lca, Aquiles Arnias, is originally from the jungle, a graduate of our Bible institute in lquitos, and a good friend of ours. Andy partnered with him in speaking at conferences along the river. Both of us, (Andy and Carol), went on a short-term missions trip back in 1995 to the cities of Chincha and Cañete, which were also devastated by the earthquake. Praise God that most of the believers of that area survived, although many lost their homes. ABWE is doing a lot to provide aid and comfort to the people of the province of Ica.
The Lord has greatly encouraged us by touching hearts and raising our monthly support to just about 70%. We actually have 4 churches supporting us now! At the rate that our support has been coming in, we would need around 7 more churches to partner with us. We are so grateful for the number of individuals that are supporting us, because their support has carried us through this time of training and searching for churches.
On the domestic front, Carol and the kids are gaining momentum in homeschooling. All of our kids are playing soccer and participating in AWANA. Andy is coaching Charlie and Linda’s team. The league that we are participating with has two purposes: to be a Christian outreach to the children and young people of the community and to provide good, clean, healthy fun for everyone.
As we had mentioned previously, a Spanish Bible study was started at our home church. A decision was made to change our strategy in reaching out to the Hispanic community in our area. It was decided that we would offer free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and an optional Bible study afterward. The response so far has been fantastic! It was encouraging to see a large percentage of the ESL students stay for the Bible study. Andy is currently leading the study through the Gospel of John. Later on, as our schedule begins to fill, others from our church will take over. We are not sure where God will lead this ministry, but our prayer is that it will, first and foremost, lead to the salvation of many, and secondly, lead to the planting of a church.
