Andy & Carol Patton April 2008
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him In every place.”
I Cor. 2:14
Greetings from a very warm Pharr, Texas!
Carol has two weeks of language classes left in order to complete the semester! She has been able to maintain a good grade point average in spite of the many extra-curricular “challenges” that we as a family have faced over the last few months. She really deserves a break!
Our kids will be getting out of Grace Christian School on the 22nd of May. They have been able to participate in many inter-scholastic sports, music, and academic activities during this past semester. They’ve also been able to develop new friendships and have enjoyed going on the many field trips that the school has sponsored.
Andy traveled to Colombia, South America for the South and Central American leadership conference held by the mission. Following that trip, he went to Clarks Summit, PA to speak at a global outreach conference held at the Baptist Bible Seminary. It was encouraging to see so many seminarians motivated to go into missions. Upon returning from PA, Andy took the kids and his Aunt Linda to Spring Camp in the highlands of Texas. There he was able to help counsel and help with activities for a group of rambunctious boys. Later, it was a special privilege for Andy to speak, in Spanish, at a local nursing home here in the Pharr/McAllen area.
|We were so saddened by the homegoing of Andy’s sister-in-law, Ruth, on March 26th. Ruth was married to Andy’s brother, John, and together they were missionaries to Madrid, Spain. John and Ruth had been married almost 20 years. In the summer of 2005, Ruth was diagnosed with cancer. There were periods of time when the cancer seemed to be in a remission of sorts. However, her condition began to worsen considerably toward the end of 2007. We were so grateful to be able to spend quality time with Ruth during last Thanksgiving, with most of our family present. Andy traveled to Michigan for the memorial service and spent time with John. All of Andy’s siblings and his parents were able to be there as well.
Ruth left a tremendous legacy, setting an example of how the Christian life should be lived. She impacted many people around the world for Jesus Christ. Pray for John as he seeks God’s will for him as he moves forward in life.|
IQUITOS and PERU
Not a day goes by that at least one of us doesn’t get hit by an overwhelming feeling of wanting to be back in Iquitos. We really miss being there. Most of all, we miss the people We have crossed paths with groups and individuals that want to go to Iquitos to visit or minister, but sadly we are not able to be there right now. Pray that missionaries will be granted visa renewals, because currently the Peruvian government has been denying renewals for most missionaries. Also, there are rumors flying around that the US is going to establish a military base in the Peruvian jungle. This has many people upset and has led to an increase in anti-American sentiment. Pray that it will not hurt the missions effort there.
|Pray for our home church, away from home, Iglesia Bautista Central (pictured here). The church has been gradually growing. We’re going to miss our friends from there while we’re on our trip. Pray for Pastor Juan Trevino and the rest of the leadership as they complete the construction of a community outreach building and continue to develop new ministries in the community.|
At the beginning of June, we will be in Pompano Beach, Florida in order for Andy to attend an Evangelism and Discipleship course. Immediately following, we will be at a conference with the leadership of Spanish-speaking South America. We would like to be in Maryland for a couple of weeks in June, since that is where our sending church is. We will miss Andy’s Aunt Linda while we’re away. Please pray for us as we have to make some decisions about how to best use the remainder of our summer before language school starts up again.
